"Conference Weekend!" (sent 10-5-15)
Conference week is always the best week! The work was pretty slow this week, but hey... at least we had fun! Here is a run down...
- First, we had exchanges this week with our sister training leaders and I got to go on exchanges with my mission mom, Hermana Moberly again! Ah, it's always so fun to be back with her. - Also it rained A LOT this week, and there was a hurricane warning. Our mission president told everyone to go food shopping early so we could buy three days worth of food and water just in case we had to stay in. Luckily the hurricane didn't hit us and actually that was the driest day we had! - we finally were able to meet with our favorite super star investigator Kathrinne this week. She is so golden, she wants to get baptized, she said she has already received her answer that the Book of Mormon is true and that she knows that baptism is the next step. Her mom also wants to get baptized, the only dele,a is that they say they want to go to church one or two YEARS before they commit to baptism! So we are working on that, Kathrinne is so close! - I am currently emailing from Tysons Corner, like the biggest mall in Virginia, it's pretty cool. It's just so funny because I always heard about Virginia and Tysons Corner from my mom because she grew up here, and now I'm living it!
Now for the best part....GENERAL CONFERENCE!! Alright, I LOVED this conference, there were so many fantastic talks! I watched two sessions in English and two is Spanish, even though I was able to get more out of the English, I was so surprised at how much I was still able to get out of Spanish. It is too hard to chose a favorite talk, but one of the ones I really liked was Elder Oaks. Yes, he talked about dating and marriage, but what I really liked that he said we need to "tighten our grip on the iron rod". He also talked about applying the scriptures to our lives, staying out of debt, and "coming to yourself" or pondering about where you want to be years down the road and make goals to get there. I also loved Elder Eyring's talk on the Holy Ghost, and the challenge Durrant gave everyone to "ponderize" a scripture a week ( in Spanish the word is "meditizar", we were so confused when we were listening in Spanish). It was also fantastic to finally find out who our new Apostles are and to hear from them. I love all three of them and I know they will do a fantastic job! And of course I cannot forget our dear Prophet Monson, I love him and I loved his words, he is a man of God. That's all for this week, I hope you all had a chance to watch conference, if not go back and watch/read it! #LDSconf Love you all!
Thanks for your support and prayers.
"Half Way!" (sent 10-12-15)
Well this was a pretty great week, I didn't just get to go to the temple once, but TWICE! What a way to celebrate my 9 months! So, half way through my mission I FINALLY made it to the Temple Visitor Center! Our investigator didn't cancel on us, we found a ride that didn't cancel on us last minute, and everything went smoothly! The morning we went to the visitors center, our stake put on a breakfast just for the missionaries. It was so cute, the members are so good to us! All of the sisters (and us Hermanas) took advantage of the changing leaves and had a small photo shoot. Then we were able to take our investigator Ashley and her mom to the visitors center, it was so awesome! I love the model scale of the temple, it has so many small details. Then today we got to go do a session in the temple. We got super lucky that we didn't have to change out p day to go. Usually the temple is not open on Monday, but because it is a Holliday and because the temple just finished being cleaned it was open, so we went with the Senior couple Davis. I love the DC temple, it is so beautiful inside and out.
Drumroll....I hit 9 months, half-way, hump day! I can't believe it! It seems so short, it's going way too fast! We didn't do anything special during the day, but when we got home we invited the sisters that live next to us to light a paper lantern and let it go. It was fun, and we couldn't stop ourselves from singing the song from Tangled when they let all the lanterns go.
We also had interviews with President Huntsman, he is a great guy, so funny. I am still studying about faith and I chose Alma 12:6 for my "ponderize" scripture this week. We have not been seeing a lot of success in this area for a while, but I need to remember to not be discouraged and keep up my faith, because the witness comes after the trial of faith. We are obedient and we are working hard, our promised blessings are coming our way, just in the Lord's timing. I invite you all, if you haven't already, to chose a ponderize scripture this week and to well....ponderize it! (If you don't know what I'm talking about, here is the link: https://www.lds.org/general-conference/2015/10/my-heart-pondereth-them-continually?lang=eng
I love being a missionary, I love the Washington DC South Mission, and I love all of you! Have a great week!
"Just another week doing the Best Thing in the World!"
Wow, this transfer is just flying by! I can't believe that next week is Halloween and that Christmas is only 9 Friday's away!!! Well, this week was pretty great, as always here are the highlights...
- WE ATE SO MUCH FOOD!!! Literally, on Wednesday every single person we saw gave us food, it was soooo much, and we were dying at the end of the day! - Two missionaries returned home this week, it was great! Now we (the missionaries) have two new best friends that are willing and have time to go out teaching with us! - One of Hna DeBry's recent converts went through the temple for the first time this week, so she got to go to the temple for the third time in one week! I however got to go on splits with Hna Mugleston is Sudley!! It was so good to be back there, even if it was just for a few hours! We went to El Mirador, which has the best horchata in the world!! We had a great time together, just prep for when we are really companions ;) oh and I crashed their zone picture... - We had a "Finding Fest" as a zone and we found 47 new investigators!!! - We weren't able to teach any of our progressing investigators this week, but we got through to like three less actives and it was awesome! - Today we went to Washington DC to see a few of the memorials. We ran into some sign language missionaries from the DC North mission. This was Hna DeBry's last time in DC. We wanted to go to the top of the Washington Memorial, but you have to get tickets a day in advance.
Now for the good stuff... This week I have been thinking a lot about the end of my mission (not in a trunky way) because of the returned missionaries that just got home and because my comp is going home so soon! This Sunday both of the returned missionaries gave their homecoming talks, and there was an obvious difference in them, it was clear that one of them put everything he had into his mission and became a new person through Christ, and the other just had a good time serving the Lord but didn't really change or get much out of it because he didn't put much into it. I realized that I wanted to be just like the "good" missionary and put everything I have into serving the Lord, because it is truly only when we lose ourselves in serving Christ that we find ourselves. Missions are sooo short! 18 months is nothing, and I'm already down to 9. I only have 9 months to give everything I have. By the end of my mission when I have to take off my name tag, I hope that I will be able to say, "Lord, I did all that I could." I don't want to have any regrets, no wondering what would have happened if I had truly given my all. With that, my "ponderize" scripture this week is Doctrine and Covenants 4:2, which talks about serving the lord with all your heart might mind and strength.
Sorry this was not the greatest email of all time, maybe next week will be better...
Hope you all have a great week!
Well, Mom won't comment too much on this week's posting, since it's a long one. I just love it all! Ashley teaches me each week to be a better person! You can check out the "photos" section for more cute pics!
